The Trunk

Build for what comes next.

As organizations evolve, the work around them has to evolve too. Programs need structures that can support them. Teams need clarity about how they work together. New services need a foundation strong enough to sustain them.

We work alongside teams to turn ideas into functioning programs and to strengthen the structures that support growing work, whether that’s creating something new or rethinking what already exists.

The Trunk is LaurelRoot’s organizational and program design work. We work alongside your team to turn a defined challenge, opportunity, or priority into something that works in practice.

The work might involve one part of an organization or several. Depending on what the organization needs, we may design a new program, reshape teams and roles, strengthen supervision, rethink workflows, develop a service delivery model, build new tools and processes, or prepare the organization to take on something new. Often, these pieces are connected. We look at the whole change and build the parts that need to work together.

The scope of each Trunk engagement is shaped around the organization’s goals, capacity, and priorities. We do not start with a predetermined list of services. We start with what needs to change and determine together what it will take to make that change work.

The work looks different from organization to organization. Our approach does not.

What we help build

We help organizations design and strengthen the structures that make good work possible.

Programs and services
Designing new programs, strengthening existing service models, or adapting services as community needs and organizational priorities change.

Teams and roles
Clarifying responsibilities, decision making, staffing structures, and the ways people and teams need to work together.

Supervision and leadership
Building management and supervision structures that support staff and distribute responsibility more effectively.

Workflows and systems
Creating practical processes that help work move clearly from one person or team to the next, without relying on workarounds or institutional memory.

Tools and processes
Developing the templates, protocols, training materials, decision tools, and other practical resources people need to carry the work forward.

Implementation and change
Helping organizations put a new structure, program, or process into practice, learn from what happens, and make thoughtful adjustments along the way.

The goal is not to create something that looks good on paper. It is to build something your people can actually use.

How the work happens

We start by defining what needs to change and what success needs to look like. From there, we work with the people who understand the work, the people responsible for carrying it forward, and the leaders who will make decisions about it.

Together, we design the approach, build what is needed, and put it into practice.

We expect the first version to teach us something.

We use that information to make reasonable refinements and strengthen the final result.

Then we step back.

The organization should own what has been built and have the tools and understanding to continue adapting it after our work is finished.

What you leave with

You may leave with a new program or service model, a clearer organizational structure, redesigned workflows, stronger supervision practices, new tools and processes, trained leaders, or a combination of these.

More importantly, you leave with a change that has been developed with the people who will use it, tested in practice, and refined based on what you learn. You will have practical guidance to continue conversations, recognize what is changing, and make thoughtful decisions about where the work should go next.

We bring experience and a process for getting from challenge to change. Your organization brings knowledge of its people, its work, and its community.

We build together. We test what we build. We learn from what happens.

And when the work is ready to stand on its own, we leave it with you.
