The Canopy

Give leaders room to grow.

Strong organizations need strong leaders. But becoming a leader is rarely as simple as being given a new title.

In mission driven organizations, people are often promoted because they are excellent at the work itself. Suddenly, they are responsible for supervising people who were once their peers, making decisions that affect their teams, managing competing demands, and sometimes continuing to carry the work that made them successful in the first place.

The Canopy is LaurelRoot’s leadership development work. We help leaders navigate those transitions with greater clarity, confidence, and support.

Our work is grounded in the realities of mission driven organizations and the people who lead them. We bring practical experience leading teams, developing managers, building programs, and navigating the tensions that come with doing demanding work while trying to lead others well.

What we help leaders navigate

Leadership development is rarely about learning one more leadership model. It is about figuring out how to lead when the answers are not always clear.

We help leaders work through challenges such as:

From peer to supervisor
Learning how to lead people who were once colleagues or friends, establish appropriate boundaries, give feedback, and hold people accountable while maintaining trust.

From expert to leader
Shifting from being the person who knows how to do the work to becoming the person who helps others do it well.

Leading while still doing the work
Balancing supervision and leadership responsibilities with caseloads, programs, deadlines, and the other demands that come with being a working manager.

Making difficult decisions
Finding clarity when priorities compete, expectations conflict, or there is no obvious right answer.

Leading through change
Helping teams navigate growth, transition, uncertainty, and the changes that come with an evolving organization.

Leading sustainably
Building boundaries, delegation, communication, and leadership practices that allow both leaders and their teams to do good work without relying on constant overextension.

How we work

We start with the leader's actual work.

Rather than relying on a generic curriculum, we create space to examine what is happening, understand the leadership challenge underneath it, and develop practical approaches that can be used in the real world.

Depending on the need, we may work with an individual leader, a small group of managers, or a leadership team. We may facilitate focused leadership development sessions, create space for reflection and peer learning, or provide individualized support around a specific leadership challenge.

The format follows the need.

We also look at the organization around the leader. Sometimes what appears to be a leadership problem is actually a question of structure, workload, role clarity, or organizational expectations. When that happens, we name it. Better leadership cannot solve a problem the organization itself needs to address.

What you leave with

You leave with more than leadership concepts.

You leave with greater clarity about your role, practical approaches for the challenges in front of you, and a stronger understanding of how to continue developing as a leader.

When Canopy is part of a larger LaurelRoot engagement, we can also help build the structures, tools, and practices that support leaders in their roles and make good leadership easier to sustain.

Leadership changes as the work changes.

Canopy creates the space to grow into what comes next.
